STATESBORO, Ga.- Georgia Southern swimmer Devan White was born on September 15, 1991 in Mesa, Arizona, but grew up in Kennesaw, Georgia. The psychology major (and coaching minor) is currently part of three GSU record holding relays- the 200, 300, and 800 Freestyle Relays. Devan also held a spot in the 2nd place 400 Freestyle Relay team at the CCSA Championships in 2013.
Devan is not only successful in the pool, but in the classroom as well. Throughout her career as an Eagle, she has earned CCSA All-Academic and Dean's List honors.
We asked Devan a few questions about her time here at GSU:
1. What is one of the most memorable moments you've experienced during your swimming career here at Georgia Southern?
Some of my most memorable moments are dancing at conference my freshmen year and everyone loving it and joining in, belly flops my freshman year during the "Do It" cheer at conference, making it through every impossible set with my teammates by my side, and so many more. There's at least one memorable moment every week. You never know what you're going to get with my teammates.
2. How did you become interested in swimming?
I didn't choose the swimmer life, it chose me. I tried so many other sports before and swimming was the only one I was actually good at and the only one I actually wanted to stick with, even if I could complete a full practice my first few months. Plus I have a typical swimmers body so why not put it to good use?
3. What's the most valuable thing you've learned from your coaches?
The most valuable thing I've learned from my coaches is that you can do anything you put your mind to. My coaches have given me sets I thought I would never finish but assured me that I was more than capable of completing and with that mindset, I was able to do what I thought was impossible. They've also taught me to be a team player. Anything I do is for the team and that makes swimming so much more enjoyable when you know there is a team behind you to help you through anything.
4. What's your favorite Georgia Southern tradition?
My favorite Georgia Southern tradition would be yelling "GEORGIA...SOUTHERN" across any playing field at sporting events. We yell it during swim meets with the parents and it is just so exciting. Plus at football games when it gets really loud it just pumps everybody up and I've never seen other schools partake in such a great cheer.
5. What are your career goals after college?
Well once I finally decide to grow up, I want to be a Sports Psychologist and help other athletes find positive outlooks on themselves and their sports. So much of what athletes do and could do, is driven by their mindset and having a positive self-image, as-well-as outlook on their sport, can help any athlete achieve their goals and I want to help other athletes see that. Plus I love working with athletes and helping them stay motivated!
Congratulations and good luck Devan!
