A national search for a replacement will begin immediately.
STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern men's tennis coach Nick Zieziula has resigned his position to pursue other opportunities in coaching, Director of Athletics Tom Kleinlein announced today.
Zieziula spent four and a half seasons as the Eagles' head coach and facilitated one of the biggest turnarounds in program history. In 2012, the Eagles were 3-20 on the year with just one Southern Conference victory. In 2013, Zieziula guided the team to an 11-9 record and a 6-4 mark in the SoCon. The year was punctuated with key victories over Furman (the 2nd in 10 years), Elon (1st since 2005), and The Citadel in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament.
"I'd like to thank Nick for his time and effort in leading our men's tennis program, and we wish him good luck with his future endeavors," said Kleinlein.
Zieziula's student-athletes also earned personal success as freshman Rayane Djouad was named SoCon Freshman of the Year in 2013 with a 14-3 (9-1 SoCon) record. He became the first Eagle to earn the distinction since 2003. Teammate Andrew Dromsky was selected First Team All-SoCon, and six student-athletes earned six or more singles wins that year.
"I want to thank Sam Baker, Cathy Beene and Jeff Blythe for hiring me and giving me my first chance to be a head coach," said Zieziula. "It has been great opportunity to be an Eagle, and I am grateful for the privilege of working with Tom Kleinlein as he has brought the entire athletic department to new heights. My wife and I have been blessed to call Statesboro home for the last four and a half years; the staff, community and most importantly, the student-athletes have been our extended family and will always be in our hearts."
Kleinlein said a national search for a replacement will begin immediately.
