Mobile, Ala. – After the 1-0 win over Appalachian State in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, the Eagles have landed in the semi-finals. They now face a tough challenge in the tournament's No. 1 seed and host University of South Alabama. The match will be contested tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern.
In their regular season meeting, the Eagles were setback by South Alabama 2-0, despite holding the Jaguars scoreless for 84 minutes.
"South Alabama is having an incredible season," commented Head Coach Brian Dunleavy. "They're well coached, don't give up a lot of goals, keep possession very well and they've got the best player in the conference in Charde Hannah who's been scoring a lot of goals."
It was Hannah who found the back of the net twice in the previous meeting, and leads the conference in goals this season with 19.
"For us, while we need to respect our opponent, it's important for us to put our stamp on the game. We need to focus on our game plan. We've been playing well over the past three games, our passing looks sharp and we've been dynamic in our attacking movement. In the back, we've done a good job in battling and making life difficult for opponents," said Dunleavy.
In their last three games, the Eagles are unbeaten and have given up just one goal over 270 minutes of play. Over that same span, they have scored 4 times and recorded 2 shut-out victories.
First Team All-Conference selection Nora El-Shami has been the incendiary intent on igniting the offense this season as she leads the team in goals with 7 on the year. Of the 4 goals scored in the last 3 games, El-Shami is responsible for 3 of those while assisting teammate Stephanie Gratto on the 4th.
Goalkeeper Katie Merson, along with Alana McShane and Renee Nance will seek to disrupt the Jaguars attack as they go after their 3rd straight shut-out. That will be no small feat, however, as South Alabama is unbeaten since September 5th and have scored at least one goal in each of their 20 games this season.
While it is easy to view this as a contest with so much on the line, Dunleavy remains calm and confident. "We are excited. It is a welcomed challenge."
