¦ Georgia Southern tips off the 2014-15 campaign with an exhibition contest against Coastal Georgia in Hanner Fieldhouse Thursday at 7 p.m.
¦ It's the 42nd season of women's basketball at Georgia Southern.
¦ The Eagles will compete in the Sun Belt Conference this season after 22 seasons in the Southern Conference.
¦ Georgia Southern senior Anna Claire Knight was named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Team in the coaches poll, and the Eagles were picked to finish 10th.
¦ Knight and junior Briana Jones were named Preseason All-Sun Belt by College Sports Madness.
¦ Knight has 1,006 career points, 412 rebounds and 132 assists. No player in school history has recorded over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 200 assists for their career.
¦ Coastal Georgia is located in Brunswick, Ga., and affiliated with the NAIA.
¦ The Eagles and Mariners have never met on the hardwood.
¦ The Mariners were 25-8 last season and 13-7 in the Southern States Athletic Conference. Coastal Georgia lost in the SSAC Championship game.
¦ The Mariners are 68-27 over the last three seasons and 2-0 this year.
¦ They opened their season Oct. 31, in the Brewton-Parker Tournament, where they topped Voorhees College 75-63 and Morris College 92-82. Statesboro native Olivia Melvin led the Mariners in both contests, averaging 23.5 points a game on the weekend.
¦ Coastal Georgia coach Jonathon Barbee is in his first season. He had stints as an assistant coach at both Furman and Georgia State.
¦ Coastal Georgia was picked seventh in the Southern States Athletic Conference Poll.
¦ The Eagles open the regular season at Lipscomb Friday, Nov. 14. The regular-season home opener is Nov. 18 against Jacksonville in a doubleheader with the Georgia Southern men's team. Tipoff for the women's game is set for 5 p.m.
¦ Season tickets are on sale now for a substantial savings off the single-game price. General admission season tickets start at just $65 with reserved seats available starting at $90. Fans can purchase a reserved combo ticket for men's and women's games for $120.
