KIAWAH, S.C. – Freshman Archer Price shot a 2-under-par 70, and three Eagles carded a 73 as Georgia Southern moved four spots up the leaderboard in the second round of the Wendy's Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point Country Club Monday.
The Eagles (+14) shot 1-over as a team, tied for the lowest round of the day with Radford (+17), and are tied for third. Winthrop (+7) leads the tournament, and Missouri (+11) is second. The Eagles are tied with Jacksonville State and GRU Augusta, while Presbyterian (+15) is a stroke back in sixth and Richmond (+16) is in seventh.
Price (-2) is fourth in the individual standings, two strokes behind the leader, Tomasz Anderson (-4) of Jacksonville State. Jake Ezell of Charleston Southern (-3), and Zach Seabolt of Winthrop are tied for second.
Scott Wolfes, Charlie Martin and Matt Mierzejewski all shot a 73 today, and Kim Koivu posted a 78. Wolfes (+3) is tied for 19th and Koivu (+6) is tied for 30th.
At one point during the day, the Eagles, who teed off hole 10, were 10-under-par and a stroke out of first place but for the second straight day, the final two holes caught up with Georgia Southern. Today it was holes 8 and 9, and the Eagle counters combined to play them 10-over-par.
"It was another poor finish to an otherwise great round today," said Georgia Southern coach Carter Collins. "The wind died down, and we took advantage for most of the round. We'd like to have those holes at the end back but that's golf, and we are moving forward knowing that we played much better than yesterday."
Price had a clean card with three birdies through his first 11 holes. The freshman bogeyed hole 3, birdied hole 5 and bogeyed hole 9 for a 70.
Wolfes logged three birdies in his first six holes and then strung together eight straight pars, but the senior was 4-over on his final four holes for a 73. Martin made the turn at 1-over and carded birdies on holes 1, 5 and 6 to move to 2-under, but the senior finished with a bogey on 8 and a double on 9.
Mierzejewski was 1-under on his first nine and even after 13 holes. The senior eagled the par-5, 543-yard fifth hole and followed that with a birdie to move to 3-under, but he double bogeyed holes 8 and 9 for a 73.
"With a good round tomorrow, we will be able to accomplish what we came to do and finish off the fall season on a high note," said Collins.
The final round is set for tomorrow, and the Eagles will tee off hole 1 at 8:10 a.m. Georgia Southern will be paired with Jacksonville State and Presbyterian.
