STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Student-Athlete Services along with Associate AD for Special Projects Tracy Ham partnered with Georgia Southern University Career Services to build a new academic program "Eagles in Transition" which strives to help student-athletes build skills necessary to compete in the job market once their playing days are over.
The Eagles in Transition program started this semester with a Resume Workshop in October which assisted 107 senior student-athletes with building, critiquing and evaluating a resume.
Eagles in Transition will also host a mock interview night and a networking night this year to help student-athletes become comfortable in the interview process and to build professional contacts by connecting them to employers and alumni.
"We are trying to create the most well rounded student-athlete that we can. We don't want them to walk across the stage at graduation and then say 'what's next?' Student-athletes experience a major transition after sports and college is over," Educational Specialist and Academic Coordinator for Women's Tennis Karen Tedders said. "It is essential that they possess the necessary skills to find a job as well as be successful in that job."
The program will expand next year to feature programs for all student-athletes and build upon the SOAR and Summer Success program which provides a good place for freshmen to start.
"We are going to start out with sophomores and try to get them to realize that playing sports isn't always going to be an option. During the junior year we really want to find out what they want to do and then during the senior year hone their job search skills," Graduate Assistant Derrick Pirkle said.
Georgia Southern Athletics provides up-to-date information on all its sports through its official website, GSEagles.com, through social media channels facebook.com/GSAthletics, twitter.com/GSAthletics, iOS app Georgia Southern Eagles and Android app Eagles GATA. Fans can purchase tickets to Georgia Southern Athletics events by calling 1-800-GSU-WINS or by visiting GSEagles.com.
