Statesboro, Ga. – Junior defender Renee Nance was named to the Sun Belt Conference All-Tournament Team the league announced Sunday. The Alpharetta, Georgia native has come up big when it mattered most all season. Nance never backed down from a challenge, even when the challenge at hand was to man-mark the league's leading scorer, Charde Hannah, from the University of South Alabama.
In the semi-final match of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, Nance did just that. Over the course of the 90 minute contest, Nance held Hannah scoreless and neutralized the biggest scoring threat in the league. Hannah, who led the league in goals this season with 20, was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. She notched 3 goals in 3 games during the tournament run, despite being denied by Nance in the semi-final.
"Hannah is an extremely talented player," commented Nance. "Giving me the task to man mark her was definitely difficult but I was flattered my coach had faith in me to do it. I was able to keep her scoreless with the help of my teammates. So many of them came up to me before the game to give me confidence and Alanna [McShane, the team's other center back] was always there to give me cover when I needed it. While I was given the task to man mark her, it was totally a team effort to keep her from scoring."
"Renee fully deserves being named All-Tournament Team, she played really well in both games," praised Head Coach Brian Dunleavy. "She has been one of the most reliable players for us, so I am happy she has been recognized for her hard work. Renee has done an awesome job all year, and she has the utmost respect of her teammates and coaches."
