Eagles Drop Decision To Troy On The Road

3 Second Half Goals Doom Georgia Southern

Troy, Al. – Georgia Southern suffered a setback at Troy University today 3-0.  The loss marks the third straight for the Eagles, all of which have come on the road.

After a scoreless first half, Troy was able to net three second half goals to shut out the Eagles.  Seven minutes after the half, Louise Cheng broke up the scoring with an unassisted goal off a free kick from 25 yards out.  In the 69th minute Annabell Simpson connected on a pass to Alissa Jones who put the ball away to make it 2-0 Troy.  The final goal came in the 74th minute as Chelsey Williams scored on a penalty kick.

"We had a solid start to the game, but we just couldn't keep it going for 90 minutes," commented Head Coach Brian Dunleavy.  "Troy was big, fast, and strong, we couldn't keep up with them down the stretch.  It's been a hard three games on the road for us.  I think we've been humbled by the physicality of the Sun Belt.  We are going to have to find ways to match up physically, find a level of consistency in our play, and do a better job of finishing.  We are right there in the mix, we just need to keep fighting."

Overall, the Eagles had 7 shots, 5 of which were on goal.  Stephanie Gratto and Melinda Lukas each had 2 shots on goal, while Renee Nance also put a shot on goal.  Although she allowed three goals, goalkeeper Katie Merson made eight saves.

The Eagles drop to 9-5-1 overall and 4-3 in the Sunbelt while Troy moves to 12-5 overall and 4-3 in the Sunbelt.

Georgia Southern returns home next Friday for a two game home stand.  Kick-off Friday against Texas State is set for 7 p.m. from Eagle Field.  The Eagles will challenge Appalachian State in the final home game of the season Sunday at 2 p.m.
