STATESBORO, Ga. – The calendar has turned to October, and that means basketball season is right around the corner.
The Georgia Southern women's basketball team completed its first full week of team practice today in Hanner Fieldhouse. Their first game is less than a month away, an exhibition contest against Coastal Georgia Nov. 6. at 7 p.m. in Hanner.
"Our veterans have set the tone in terms of the intensity and energy level needed day in and day out, and I'm pleased with the eagerness of our freshmen to compete and make adjustments on the fly," said women's basketball coach Chris Vozab.
There are quite a few new faces at practice as seven freshmen are getting their first taste of college basketball. A large part of the nucleus from last year's team also returns from last season, including three of the top-5 scorers and rebounders.
The Eagles enter the Sun Belt Conference, a historically multi-bid women's basketball league, and will play a 20-game round-robin conference schedule – all doubleheaders with the men's team.
Season tickets are on sale now for a substantial savings of the single-game price. General admission season tickets start at just $65 with reserved seats available starting at $90. Fans can purchase a reserved combo ticket for men's and women's games for $120.
Vozab also announced that senior Anna Claire Knight, junior Sierra Kirkland and redshirt sophomore Alexis Sams will serve as the team captains this season. Knight was a second-team All-Southern Conference selection after averaging 15.9 points and 4.9 rebounds a game, and Kirkland tallied 5.4 points and 5.8 rebounds in 31 contests. Sams started the first two games before an injury forced her out for the rest of the year.
