ATLANTA, GA. – Georgia Southern Women's Soccer dropped a 2-0 decision at Georgia State on Sunday afternoon as the Eagles lost their first match in league play this season. Two first half goals from set pieces gave the Panthers a lead that would not be touched.
"That was a poor performance in the first half, coupled with the fact that Georgia State came out with intensity and desire that we failed to match," said Head Coach
Brian Dunleavy. "We gave up two early goals on unlucky plays which gave us a big mountain to climb, especially on the road. It's disappointing that we didn't perform to our standard in a rivalry game. The positive side is that we got a real gut check, I'm confident our players will learn from this and not let it happen again."
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when Whitney Ravan scored following a State free kick. Former Eagle Jenna Moore struck a free kick off the post which bounced back to Ravan who scored from close range.
Ravan scored again in the 21st minute on another set piece opportunity. A free kick by Margaret Bruemmer drove the ball to the box where Lauren Harriman headed the ball goalwards. Eagle goalkeeper
Katie Merson saved the ball, but the ball was not secured as Ravan swooped in to score her second of the day.
Georgia Southern was out-shot 16-9 in the match as the Eagles dropped their first league match this season. The Eagles fall to 9-3-1 and 4-1-0 in the Sun Belt on 12 points, one back of South Alabama for first place. Georgia state is 5-6-4 overall and 3-1-1 in the Sun Belt with two weeks remaining in league play.
Next up for the Eagles is a trip to face first place South Alabama on Friday night, followed by a trip to Troy on Sunday afternoon. Georgia Southern is back at home on October 24th for the 2014 GATA game against Texas State; followed by the regular season finale against Appalachian State on October 26th.
