1/24/2014 11:57:00 AM | Swimming and Diving
STATESBORO, Ga.- Georgia Southern senior swimmer Kristen Bates swims in her last home meet of the season on Saturday, January 25th. The double major (Chemistry and Spanish) grew up in Peachtree City, GA, and enjoys volleyball, reading, baking, tanning, shopping and watching baseball.
Kristen holds both the pool and school records in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.46. For the week of January 13-19th, 2014, Bates was awarded Swimmer of the Week from the CCSA.
We asked Kristen a few questions about her time here at GSU:
1. What is one of the most memorable moments you've experienced during your swimming career here at Georgia Southern?
I have had so many wonderful experiences while swimming here that it's kind of hard to pick just one. But I would definitely say conference of my sophomore year. The whole team had a great energy and we had so much fun on top of all of the great swims. It's definitely the reason I'm so looking forward to my senior conference!
2. How did you become interested in swimming?
Back when I was in 5th grade I had a friend that was going to try out and she talked me into going. It just kinda stuck. I've been swimming ever since.
3. What's the most valuable thing you've learned from your coaches?
It's important not to let speed bumps get in the way of your goals and discourage you. Focus on your goals and work hard and the end results will be there.
4. What's your favorite Georgia Southern tradition?
My favorite Georgia Southern tradition would have to be Freedom flying at the beginning of our home football games. It's so unique and it makes Georgia Southern stand out against other schools and their traditions.
5. What are your career goals after college?
As a double major in chemistry and Spanish, I am planning on going to graduate school to get my doctorates in both Spanish and nanochemistry with goals to research pharmaceutical and medicinal technologies.
Good luck Kristen!
