STATESBORO, GA.- Georgia Southern swimming and diving received both swimmer and diver of the week honors from the CCSA for the week of January 13-19. Senior Kristen Bates and senior Sara Meisenhelder had outstanding performances at their meet against Radford on January 18th.
Kristen Bates broke the pool-record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.46, and claimed two more first place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.95) as well as the 200-yard medley relay (breaststroke, 28.97). This is Bates's first award of the season. Bates now holds the school and pool record for the 100-yard breaststroke.
"Achieving an NCAA B cut and breaking a pool record certainly earned Kristen this honor," said head coach Nathan Kellogg. "Coming off a rough fall semester, she proved to herself that she can still swim fast. I'd like to say her performances were surprising, but I know what she is capable of doing and I know her best performances are still ahead of her."
Sara Meisenhelder owned both diving events last weekend against the Highlanders. In the 3-meter dive she tallied a score of 272.55 and in the 1-meter dive she earned 255.60. This is Meisenhelder's first award of the season.
"Sara had a great meet over the weekend," said head diving coach David Giambra. "She placed 1st on both one and three meter while doing 12 fantastic dives. Sara has been diving really well in practice and she was able to have that carry over to the meet. I was really proud of how well she dove and excited to see how she finishes her senior season."
The Eagles compete at home this Friday, January 24th against Gardner-Webb and Saturday, January 25th against Gardner-Webb and University of North Florida.
