Women's Soccer Ties with Samford in Overtime, 0-0

Sydnie Van Curen
Box Score BIRMINGHAM, AL.- Georgia Southern women's soccer opened Southern Conference play at Samford on Friday night with a 0-0 draw. GSU opened its final season in the league with a point from the first match and are 2-5-2 overall this season.

Coach Brian Dunleavy said, "Defensively we were excellent. Samford is a quality team that just kept attacking in waves, but our defenders and goalkeeper (Molly Williams) really stepped it up and kept us in it. Getting a tie on the road against a team of that caliber is a very good result. Our focus now is on Chattanooga."

Georgia Southern atoned for last year's 2-1 loss to the Bulldogs at home with the 0-0 draw. The Eagle defense has now not allowed a goal in their last 342 minutes of play at the Samford Soccer Staium when factoring in last season's SoCon Tournament games in Birmingham.

The Bulldogs came out attacking with a shot hitting the crossbar within the first minute. The game held that same intensity throughout all 110 minutes.

Molly Williams was stellar in goal for the Eagles, stopping 13 shots on the night in her first collegiate appearance.

Sydnie Van Curen paced the Eagle offense with three shots while Alex Murphy recorded the Eagles' only shot on goal.

Next up for Georgia Southern is a trip to Chattanooga on Sunday morning. The match starts at 11 a.m.
