Volleyball Opens Southern Conference Play at Home this Weekend

For Openers
Georgia Southern (12-2, 0-0) plays its first Southern Conference games of the season as the Eagles welcome Elon (8-7, 0-0) and UNCG (7-6, 0-0) into Hanner Fieldhouse Friday night and Saturday afternoon. The Eagles take on the Phoenix Friday at 6 p.m. and face the Spartans at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Georgia Southern has won 25 of its last 28 matches, dating back to last season, which includes a 12-1 mark in Hanner Fieldhouse. The Eagles are on a current six-match winning streak, and all six wins have come at home.

Saturday is volleyball Alumni Day and Georgia Southern volleyball alumni have been invited to the match to be honored at intermission. There is also a ticket promotion for all fans – present your football ticket for the Eagles' 6 p.m. game against Chattanooga and gain free admission to the volleyball match. #TrueBlue Posters will be distributed at Friday's contest. 

Players to Watch
Georgia Southern – Katie Bange is coming off an MVP performance at last weekend's Bash in the Boro and was also named all-tournament at the GSU Volleyball Tournament. The sophomore is hitting .280 and averaging 2.61 kills and 0.80 blocks per set. Sophomore Crysten Curry and senior Nicole Jeschelnik were also named all-tournament at the Bash in the Boro.

Elon – Megan Gravley leads the Phoenix with 2.70 kills per set, and Kris Harris is hitting .340, which ranks fourth in the SoCon, and averaging 2.66 kills per set. Harris also averages 0.38 aces per set, good for third in the league.

UNCG – Olivia Humphries ranks fourth in the SoCon and leads the team in kills per set with 3.43. Karrian Chambers ranks 10th in the league with 2.90 kills per set. The Spartans rank second in the conference in aces, averaging 1.43 a frame.

Next Up
The Eagles continue an 11-match homestand with a contest against The Citadel Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m. in Hanner Fieldhouse. It's the Eagles' GATA game, and all Georgia Southern student-athletes will be in attendance. Georgia Southern caps the homestand with a 6 p.m. match against Furman Friday, Oct. 4.
