TROY, Ala. – Kym Coley,
Jamie DeRatt and
Katie Bange all recorded double-digit kills for Georgia Southern, but the Eagle volleyball squad fell 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 25-23) at Troy Monday afternoon.
Coley tallied 12 kills and five blocks, and DeRatt added 11 kills and 15 digs for Georgia Southern (3-1), which lost its first match of the season. Bange finished with 10 kills and three blocks, and Alexandra Beecher posted 20 digs.
Marija Zelevonic led Troy (2-2) with a match-high 17 kills, and Kayla Pickart tallied seven kills. Alexandra Alexander finished with 32 assists and eight digs.
The match was tightly-contested for all three sets, but the Eagles committed 11 service errors and 23 hitting errors.
Down 22-18 in the second set and 1-0 in the match, the Eagles ran off four straight points and tied the score on a block by
Nicole Jeschelnik,
Christina Vereb and Coley. The teams traded points, and then the Eagles were whistled for being out of rotation, giving the Trojans a 24-23 lead. DeRatt tied the set with a kill, but Pickart put down consecutive kills for the Trojans, and Troy took a 2-0 lead in the match.
With the score tied 22-22 in the third set following a DeRatt kill, the Eagles committed a service error and Zelenovic got a kill to give Troy a 24-22 cushion. DeRatt put a ball down for Georgia Southern, but Zelenovic answered with a kill down the left side line for Troy to end the match.
The Eagles trailed 21-17 in the first set but rallied with a 6-3 run to trim the lead to 24-23 after a Bange kill. Troy took a timeout, and Zelevonic putt down a kill off an Alexander assist as the Trojans took the set 25-23.
Georgia Southern will travel to the Ole Miss Magnolia Invitational this weekend.
