STATESBORO, Ga. – "By the Numbers" spotlights some of the interesting statistics, rankings and milestones as they relate to the Georgia Southern Football program each week.

In its first year of transition as a reclassifying program, Georgia Southern will not be included in the NCAA statistical rankings for either FBS or FCS. Based on a comparison, the Eagles rank first in both FBS and FCS with as Saturday's 576 rushing yards total was the top single-game rushing performance in Division I.

Dominique Swope is just five rushing yards away from tying Gerald Harris's career rushing total 2,379 yards for 10th place on the Eagles' all-time rushing list. The junior from Buford, Ga., surpassed Raymond Gross Saturday for sole possession of 11th place on the career rushing list and currently stands at 2,374.

Georgia Southern accounted for 11 touchdowns against Savannah State with a record nine different Eagles scoring touchdowns, including two each by William Banks and Dominique Swope. Quarterbacks Kevin Ellison and Vegas Harley and running backs Devin Scott and Chris Jordan had their first career touchdowns. Graduate transfer Torrance Hunt had his first touchdown in an Eagle uniform.

Along with the 11 touchdowns were 11 extra points, one better than the previous Georgia Southern team record of 10 set in the 2004 Johnson C. Smith game. Eagle kickers Conner Tierney (7 extra points) and Alex Hanks (4 extra points) combined for the record and tied the team record for perfect PAT percentage, last set at Old Dominion in 2012.

Thirty-five first downs in the 2013 home opener tied the Georgia Southern team record for first downs in a single game. The record goes all the way back to the Sept. 22, 1984 game against East Carolina. The Eagles ran a record 103 plays against the Pirates in that contest.

With 77 points scored in the season opener last Saturday, Georgia Southern posted highest score in the nation in a single game across all NCAA divisions. The total ranks second in Eagle history behind 84 points scored in 2004 against Johnson C. Smith, but were the most ever in a season opener replacing the Eagles previous 76-point total against Fayetteville State.

One of the goals of the Georgia Southern's coaching staff is for the offense to record more knockdowns than total plays run. Against Savannah State, the Eagles were credited for 110 knockdowns with junior tackle Garrett Frye and sophomore guard Darien Foreman each with 10 against the Tigers.

Eagle fans witnessed the eighth-best rushing total in Georgia Southern history Saturday night and the best rushing performance in a season opener with 576 rushing yards. Twelve different Eagles carried the ball in the victory.

With 651 yards of total offense against Savannah State, the Eagles also posted their eighth-best mark in that category and the third-highest total in the Coach Jeff Monken era.

Senior quarterback Jerick McKinnon is just 41 rushing yards away from hitting the 3,000-yard career mark and would become only the eighth Eagle ever to surpass that career milestone. McKinnon ran for the third-highest single-season total in Georgia Southern history with 1,817 rushing yards in 2012 and amassed 316 yards against Central Arkansas for Eagles' single-game rushing record by a quarterback. That total against the Bears was the third-best total in NCAA FCS last year and eighth-highest total in NCAA Division I.
