Women’s Soccer Draws Charleston Southern, 0-0

Eagles out-shoot Bucs 18-3, but are forced to settle for the draw

Box Score STATESBORO, GA. – Georgia Southern Women's Soccer ticked all the boxes except the one that matters on the scoreboard on Sunday evening against Charleston Southern, settling for a 0-0 draw to the Big South's Buccaneers. The Eagles earned their first clean sheet of the season, and are now 1-4-1 on the season with league play just two weeks away.

"I'm really proud of the team to battle back and not allow a goal after a very tough loss when we gave up two goals late," said Head Coach Brian Dunleavy. "We did a really good job defensively, but we didn't have the composure to get the goal on the offensive end today. We had plenty of chances, so we're going to have to work on our finishing in the weeks going forward."

Georgia Southern owned the run of play throughout the contest, holding Charleston Southern's (3-3-1) chances to just one shot on goal and three total shots. The Eagles, however, recorded 18 shots from 10 different players. Alex Murphy shared the team-lead in shooting with Cori Dulmage as the duo took three shots each.

Georgia Southern had its best chance of the night in the first minute of overtime when a free kick was played into the box where it bounced over the Charleston Southern goalkeeper. The ball was saved off the line by the Buccaneer defense to keep the score tied at 0-0.

Charleston Southern produced a golden opportunity to win the match with about five minutes left in the second overtime. The Bucs had a breakaway chance that found the net, but the attempt was waved off when the attacker was called offside by the referee.

The match finished as a 0-0 draw, giving goalkeeper Heather Kirkover her first collegiate clean sheet.

Georgia Southern will have a week off before returning to action against a dangerous Mercer squad in Macon. The Eagles and Bears face off at 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 23rd.
