2013-14 Schedule
STATESBORO, Ga. – Games at SEC opponents Kentucky and Auburn and two holiday tournaments highlight the Georgia Southern women's basketball schedule, announced by coach Chris Vozab today.
A total of five squads on the schedule played in the NCAA Tournament or WNIT a season ago. Kentucky advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, while Auburn won its way to the round of eight in the WNIT. Southern Conference opponents Chattanooga (NCAA Tournament), Davidson (WNIT) and Appalachian State (WNIT) also advanced to the postseason.
"We are excited to test our mettle against top-caliber teams in intense environments," said Vozab. "Playing games against quality competition will provide an accurate assessment of our strengths and weaknesses so we can continue to improve."
For the second consecutive season, the Eagles will play in a pair of holiday tournaments. Georgia Southern travels to the Florida Atlantic Thanksgiving Tournament, where they meet the host Owls Nov. 29, and either Rhode Island or Detroit Nov. 30. The Eagles also play in the UNF Holiday Tournament, where they face Eastern Illinois Dec. 20 and North Florida Dec. 21.
Georgia Southern's home schedule features 12 games, including nine SoCon contests. The home slate begins Saturday Nov. 16, against Jacksonville State, in a tripleheader with the Eagle volleyball and men's basketball teams. Cal State Northridge (Nov. 19) and George Mason (Dec. 30) also make non-conference visits to Hanner Fieldhouse, while the Eagles travel to Jacksonville (Nov. 24) and Mercer (Dec. 4) for non-league games.
For the first time in four seasons, Georgia Southern will open the SoCon portion of its schedule at home. The Eagles host Furman Dec. 7 and Wofford Dec. 16 in their first two league games.
Georgia Southern will play 16 SoCon games after the new year, beginning with a trip to 2013 SoCon Tournament champion Chattanooga Jan. 4. The Mocs return the trip to Hanner Feb. 3, and 2012 SoCon Tourney champion Samford visits Statesboro Feb. 1. Davidson, which finished second in the league last season, comes to town Jan. 18, while last season's third-place team, Appalachian State makes its annual appearance Feb. 22.
For a third straight season, the SoCon Tournament returns to Asheville, N.C., at the U.S. Cellular Center and Kimmel Arena March 7-10.
"The Southern Conference is full of talented players and great coaches who will present difficult challenges for us each and every time we take the floor," said Vozab. "We grew as a program last year and were able to see that development in some late-season success in terms of wins and losses. That gave us momentum heading into the offseason, and we're really excited to build on that this year."
