STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Men's Soccer returns to the pitch this weekend with two games in Macon at the 2013 Mercer Tournament. The Eagles open and close the tournament, facing Stetson in Friday's first match before closing play on Sunday evening against Mercer from 7 p.m. Sunday's match can be seen live for free at ASun.tv.
The Eagles are back in action since dropping a nail-biter to Duke on Tuesday night in the Bull City. GSU's offense mustered 13 shots, eight on frame, but a Duke goal in the 50th minute gave the hosts the non-conference win and dashed the Eagles hopes for an upset.
Sophomore
Reed Norton had five shots, four on frame in the game against Duke, but it is the trio of
Witt Carlisle,
Eric Dinka and
Jeremy Rector that share the team scoring lead with one goal each. Carlisle scored in the opener, but Dinka and Rector's goals against Gardner-Webb gave GSU their first win of the season, 2-1 over the Bulldogs.
Stetson enters the weekend with a balanced 1-1-1 record, scoring three times and conceding three goals to open the campaign. The Hatters have gotten goals from Gianluca Carbone, Evan Jimmo and Chase Rodgers. Stetson opened the year with a 1-0 win over UMass Lowell before falling at USF, 1-0, three days later. Most recently, Stetson drew Grand Canyon 2-2 at home on Sunday of this week.
Mercer opens its home tournament on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. against Winthrop, a team the Eagles are familiar with this season. The Bears are 0-3, falling to Clemson, Elon and UNC Wilmington in the opening weeks of the season. Mercer returns home after allowing eight goals on the road, scoring just three of their own.
Georgia Southern is back on the road next weekend with a trip to the Asheville Invitational to play Radford and UNC Asheville in the High Country.
