Jennifer Wittick’s first collegiate goal washed out by heavy rains
HIGH POINT, N.C. – Georgia Southern Women's Soccer produced its best half of the season, but fell victim to inclement weather as the match at High Point was abandoned in the 47th minute. The Eagles were leading at the time, but heavy thunderstorms made the field unplayable. No make-up will be scheduled between the teams.
"It was very disappointing that the game was called off because we were comfortably in control of the game," said Head Coach Brian Dunleavy. "It would be unfair to High Point to say we were going to win the game, but thing were looking pretty good for us, so it's unfortunate that we couldn't finish it out."
At the half hour mark, freshman Jennifer Wittick got on the end of a pass from Abria Allen to score the go-ahead goal for Georgia Southern. The Eagles mounted a counterattack from a HPU free kick that fizzled out.
The Eagles carried the 1-0 advantage into the locker room at the interval along with a 5-4 lead in shots and a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal.
That advantage, however, was nullified when the match was called on account of rain.
The Eagles open a home stand this weekend when they host Stetson at Eagle Field. The match from the heart of the Erk Russell Athletic Park starts at 7 p.m.
