JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Georgia Southern Men's Soccer got its first preseason test of the 2013 season on Sunday afternoon with a 0-0 draw at North Florida. The Eagles best opportunity of the match came in the 30th minute when Eric Dinka earned a penalty for the Eagles, but the chance went for naught as the spot kick was saved. GSU is back in action next Saturday at 7 p.m. with a trip to UCF.
"I think overall we were disappointed not to get the win, but we were very encouraged that we could keep a clean sheet for 90 minutes," said Head Coach Kevin Kennedy. "The guys defended well and now we look forward to finishing the preseason against UCF next Saturday."
Georgia Southern did score a goal on the day, but the linesman's flag nullified the score. Ethan LaPan slipped the ball through to Witt Carlisle in the 25th minute, allowing the senior to slot the ball into the next. Carlisle, however, was called offisdes on the play.
Five minutes later, Dinka got free down the right side and worked into the box, only to be hauled down for a penalty kick. Sophomore Reed Norton took the penalty struck the low shot. North Florida's keeper guessed right and saved the penalty, scuttling the scoring opportunity.
The Georgia Southern defense withstood a barrage of 13 shots, seven on frame to post a clean sheet.
Georgia Southern Men's Soccer closes the preseason next weekend with a trip to face UCF in Orlando. The Eagles and Knights square-off at 7 p.m.
