Women's Soccer Coach Lindsey Vanderspiegel Resigns

STATESBORO, Ga. – Eagle women's soccer coach Lindsey Vanderspiegel has resigned to accept the same position at Virginia Commonwealth University, Georgia Southern Director of Athletics Tom Kleinlein announced today.

In just her second season, Vanderspiegel led Georgia Southern to its first women's soccer Southern Conference Tournament title and subsequent NCAA Tournament appearance in 2012. The Eagles finished with a 10-8-5 overall record, winning the league championship over Furman on penalty kicks (5-4) before falling 4-0 to Wake Forest in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

"Lindsey raised our women's soccer program to a new level in her short time at Georgia Southern, and we thank her and wish her well in her future endeavors," said Kleinlein. "We will begin a national search for her replacement immediately."

Vanderspiegel led the Eagles to a 7-11-2 mark in her first campaign, giving her a record of 17-19-7 in two seasons at Georgia Southern. The Eagles posted a 2-1 win over UNCG in the 2011 SoCon Tournament, their first tourney victory in four years. She was named head coach of the Eagles after four seasons as an assistant coach at Hofstra.

A Virginia native, Vanderspiegel earned numerous accolades as a midfielder at William & Mary, including Colonial Athletic Association Women's Soccer Player of the Year in 2002, 2001 CAA tournament MVP and 2000 CAA Rookie of the Year. The CAA named her to the league's 25th Anniversary Women's Soccer Team in conjunction with its Silver Anniversary celebration.
