Softball Visits Chattanooga for Three-Game Set

STATESBORO, GA. – Georgia Southern Softball is back on the road this weekend for a three-game set against the Chattanooga Mocs. The series pits the winners of the last six SoCon Regular Season Championships, dating back to the 2007 campaign. The series begins on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader and concludes on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

The Eagles won the series opener against Furman last weekend before dropping a pair of one-run contests. It was the first SoCon series defeat for the Eagles since the 2011 season as dropped the Eagles to 5-3 in league play. The Eagles swept a doubleheader from Mercer on Wednesday afternoon behind a complete game shutout from Brooke Red and a walk-off double by Lexi Allen to win game two.
Georgia Southern’s next home series, which starts on April 13th, is Alumni Weekend with former Eagles being honored before Sunday’s series finale. Softball alumni interested in participating in the weekend are asked to contact Head Coach Annie Smith for more information.
Sarah Purvis has a 9-11 overall record with three shutouts this season with a 2.27 ERA. She has paired that with 130 total strikeouts while holding opposing batters to a .200 average at the plate. Last year against Chattanooga, Purvis was 3-0 with a 1.33 ERA while holding the nation’s top-hitting team to a .137 batting average.
Brooke Red picked up a pair of wins on Wednesday against Mercer to go to 6-3 on the season. She lowered her ERA to 2.32 by not allowing an earned run in 11 innings of work. Overall, the sophomore has struck out 54 and held opponents to a .246 average.
Chattanooga enters the weekend with a 21-16 record and a 6-3 mark in league play following three-straight wins over Western Carolina last weekend. Kasey Tydingco is hitting .371 on the season with four of the team’s home runs. She was named SoCon Player of the Week on Monday after hitting .600 in the Western Carolina series.
Taylor Deason is 14-7 in the circle for Chattanooga this season with a 3.41 ERA in 30 appearances. She has 115 strikeouts on the season after being named second team All-SoCon Preseason back in February by the league’s coaches.
The Eagles continue the five-game road swing on Wednesday with a trip to face Georgia State in Panthersville. The doubleheader from the outskirts of Atlanta starts at 4 p.m.
