STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern golf coach Larry Mays announced today that Kim Koivu (Helsinki, Finland) will transfer to Georgia Southern from Brevard College in North Carolina. He will be a junior in eligibility and have two years remaining.
While in Finland, Koivu finished with Low-Amateur honors at the 2011 Gant Open, a Nordea Professional Tour event, where he shot 68-70-71 (-4). In 2012, he tied for 10th at the Paltamo Open, another professional event where he competed as an amateur.
Koivu was named South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year and first-team all-conference at Brevard in 2011-12. He recorded three individual wins, including carding 66-70=136 (-8) to win the Cherokee Valley Invitational.
He was named first-team All-SAC again as a sophomore after recording eight top-15 finishes in nine tournaments. That includes six top-10 outings and a win at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate. He recently tied for sixth at the SAC Championships.
Koivu posted 14 top-10 finishes in 20 tournaments, including four individual victories, during his two years in Brevard.
“Kim is a very experienced player who has proven he can compete on a high level,” said Mays. “He will bring that experience to Georgia Southern and will be great asset to our program during the next two years.”
Koivu joins a 2013 recruiting class that already includes Sam Towler (Hertfordshire, England), who has enjoyed a successful start to 2013. His results this spring include runner-up performances in the Dubai/ Emirates Amateur Open and the Palmerston Trophy.
Georgia Southern has won three tournament titles in 2012-13 and finished in the top-5 in six tournaments.
