BURLINGTON, N.C. -- No. 7 Georgia Southern Women's Tennis qualified for the Southern Conference Championships quarter finals for the third year in a row with a 4-2 victory over tenth seeded Wofford on Thursday afternoon at the Burlington Tennis Center. Sophomore Jordana Klein clinched the match at a score of 4-2 after the Eagles (10-11) picked up the doubles point and two singles victories.

"I thought we came out and played strong doubles today but in singles play we started kind of flat. It took us a while to get a groove and a rhythm in singles but we finally did that at the end and came through," said Head Coach Amy Bonner.

After losing the first set 7-6, Klein did not let up and defeated her opponent Audrey Coventry 6-2, 6-3 in the second and third set.

"She's a fighter. Any time someone can come out and compete all season long like that, that's a true competitor. I'm very proud of the way she competed today and all throughout the season," said Bonner.

Setting up Klein's heroics were freshman Mary Phillips Smith and junior Paola Garrido, earning wins at No. 4 and 1 respectively. Smith earned the first singles victory of the day, tying the score back up at two when she defeated her opponent Guinn Garcia 6-4, 6-3. Garrido continued the momentum shift when she won her match against Sarah Evans with a score of 7-6 (4), 6-1, giving the Eagles a 3-2 lead.

Garrido and Smith were also successful earlier in the day, booking the point-clinching doubles victory on court one against Evans and Othilia Lindqvist (8-4). Senior Natalie Maffett and freshman Stephanie Woods added a doubles win as well, defeating Julia Paulson and Lucy Schermerhorn with a score of 8-3 at No. 2.

The Eagles will continue the tournament tomorrow, Friday, against Elon at 11 a.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The original time of 1 p.m. has been moved up due bad weather predicted to come into the area tomorrow afternoon.
