Women's Tennis Defeats Western Carolina in Regular Season Finale

CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Georgia Southern Women's Tennis finished up their regular season on a high note as they defeated SoCon rival Western Carolina 6-1 on Friday afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, N.C. The Eagles (9-11, 4-6 SoCon) clinched the doubles point and won five out of six singles matches.

In doubles play, junior Paola Garrido and freshman Mary Phillips Smith defeated Stacia Kissell and Shannon Bettiol 8-3 at the No. 1 while Natalie Maffett teamed up with Stephanie Woods to win their match 8-4 on court two. Jordana Klein and Caitlin Kitchen also added a doubles win to their column as they received a default win at the No. 3.

All Eagles but one also picked up wins in singles play.

Freshman Francesca Norregaard picked up her first career win at the No. 5, clinching the match for the Eagles with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Erin Maguire.

Garrido defeated Kissell 7-5, 4-6, 10-2 on court one, while on the court next to her, Klein easily put away Sara Ruiz Pajares 6-0, 6-0, earning her fifth straight victory and team-leading 12th overall. Smith evened out her conference ledger to 5-5 after a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over Nicole Nielly on court three.

Kitchen added another win by default on the day, as there was no Western Carolina player to play the match planned for court six.

The Eagles now turn focus to the SoCon tournament, held in Elon, N.C. from April 18-21.
