STATESBORO, Ga. -- With a top five Southern Conference ranking and a first round bye on the line, Men's Tennis will host Samford and Chattanooga at the Hanner Tennis Complex on Friday and Saturday, April 12-13 at noon.
Samford (11-8, 6-2 SoCon) currently stands one place above the the Eagles (9-7, 5-3 SoCon) in the rankings and Chattanooga (10-8, 5-4 SoCon) momentarily holds the sixth place, two slots below the Eagles. With a win over Chattanooga, the Eagles are almost guaranteed of a top five finish and a first round bye in the tournament.
The Eagles are coming off a weekend split against conference opponents UNCG and Elon, handing SoCon leader Elon their first league loss on Sunday, April 7.
"It's tough to stay focused after that because obviously it was a big win for the program and for keeping us alive in the standings to get a bye out of the first round," said Zieziula. "We had a good response on Saturday after the loss and I think a lot of Sunday's win revolved around competing in the present tense. So that's what will have to do on Friday and Saturday and not worry about other league matches that are going on."
Seniors Alex Doherty and Matthijs Verdam (pictured) will be honored prior to Saturday's match against the Mocs.
"I think that it's always a bit sad to see people leave the program. Especially since Matthijs has invested so much over four years. But at the same time you see the amount of growth that Alex and Matthijs have made as people on and of the court and you really see their maturity. I'm excited to see the things they'll be going onto after Georgia Southern," said Zieziula.
After this weekend, the Eagles will head to Elon, N.C. for the SoCon Tournament that will be held April 18-21.
