Softball Faces First Midweek Test on Wednesday Versus Jacksonville

STATESBORO, Ga. – After three consecutive weeks of tournament play, Georgia Southern Softball hosts Jacksonville on Wednesday in the first midweek game of the 2013 campaign. The Eagles are 8-10 on the year, but lead the all-time series against Jacksonville 8-6. The afternoon doubleheader begins at 5 p.m. from Eagle Field.
The Eagles split a midweek series late in the 2012 campaign as the teams traded shutouts. Georgia Southern bounced back from a 2-0 loss in the opener to best the Dolphins 1-0 in the finale. The Eagles are 5-3 against the Dolphins at Eagle Field in the series which dates back to the 2007 season.

Shelby Morrill paces the Georgia Southern bats this season with a .365 average. She has earned 13 walks on the campaign while busting three doubles. Junior Kourtny Thomas has provided the pop, hitting five home runs this year with 11 RBIs en route to a .559 slugging percentage.
With 72 strikeouts in the circle, Sarah Purvis is holding opposing batters to a .190 average. Sophomore Brook Red picked up her second win of the season on the rubber last weekend and holds a 1.59 ERA. The Eagles’ other key pitching contributor is Allie Miles with 39 strikeouts and a 2.30 ERA.
The Dolphins are 14-5 on the season with five batters hitting over the .300 mark, led by Sarah Simon. She has a .393 average with six home runs and 14 RBIs. The JU pitching staff is led by Victoria Brown with a 6-1 record and a 1.51 ERA. Cecile Comez is unbeaten at 5-0 with a 2.17 ERA.
The Eagles open SoCon Play this weekend with a trip to face Elon at the brand-new Hunt Softball Park which is located on the north side of Elon’s campus, adjacent to Rhodes Stadium. The weekend series starts with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m.
