STATESBORO, GA. – Georgia Southern Softball ventures away from the friendly confines for the first time this season with an appearance in the FGCU LaQuinta at the Airport Tournament. Play begins on Friday morning at 11:15 a.m. against Southern Illinois and continues later in the day against Wichita State.
Saturday’s schedule features a doubleheader against Southern Illinois at 9 a.m., followed by a 3:45 p.m. contest against the top-ranked and defending national champion Alabama Crimson Tide. The weekend concludes on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. against host Florida Gulf Coast.
The Eagles opened the 2013 season last weekend with a 3-1 mark at the Eagle Round Robin. A 10-inning loss to St. John’s was the only blemish on the weekend which featured three victories in the circle for the defending SoCon Pitcher of the Year, Sarah Purvis. The junior netted SoCon Pitcher of the Week honors with a 1.11 ERA and 31 strikeouts. She fanned 14 batters in the season-opener which tied her for the seventh most in a single-game.
On the offensive side, Shelby Morrill hit .455 with a 5-for-11 performance at the plate. Kourtny Thomas, however, hit a pair of home runs and a pair of doubles while driving in six runs for a .933 slugging percentage in the opening weekend. GSU’s freshman catcher, A.J. Hamilton registered her first career hit against St. John’s with a home run against the Red Storm.
