STATESBORO, Ga. -- The Georgia Southern Men’s Tennis team is off to a good start. With a 2-1 record, and their only loss coming against No. 60 Georgia State, the Eagles are headed north for two tough matches against Winthrop and USC Upstate on Friday and Saturday.
Due to bad weather predictions on Sunday, the Eagles’ match against Winthrop on Memorial Courts in Rock Hill, S.C. has been moved to Friday 6 p.m. The team takes on Upstate on Saturday at 2 p.m at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex in Spartanburg, S.C.
Last time on the court, the Eagles beat Kennesaw State 6-1 in Atlanta. Senior Matthijs Verdam clinched the match 6-3, 6-3 on court one and freshman Rayane Djouad went 2-0 in singles and doubles in his first weekend of dual match competition.
“I think it’s easy to keep everybody motivated after a good win against Kennesaw State and we need to keep that momentum going,” said Head Coach Nick Zieziula. “It will be two good tests for us against Winthrop and Upstate. We saw Upstate in the fall and we took a few losses at spots against them so it will be good motivation to take a little revenge and show them how much we’ve grown in the last couple months.”
The Winthrop Eagles are 2-4 on the year and have lost their last two matches. Three of the team’s four losses have been against ranked teams. The Spartans are 3-4 on the year against some tough opponents as well.
“It’s going to be a good weekend,” said Zieziula. “They’re both very solid teams, top to bottom. We have good scouting reports on Upstate and Winthrop has played a tough schedule so far, against top 25 and top 50 teams so they’ve had some good experience earlier in the season so we need to be sharp right off the bat.”
After this weekend, the Eagles have a four match home stand starting with a Friday afternoon match against East Carolina on Feb. 22 at the Hanner Tennis Complex.
