CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Georgia Southern swimming closes out fall competition at the Wingate Fall Frenzy this weekend while diving heads to UNC for the Dowd Nike Cup.
The Eagle swimmers are gearing up to compete against athletes from thirteen different schools including Wingate, Queens, Carson-Newman, Catawba, College of Charleston, Gardner-Webb, Lenoir-Rhyne, Mars Hill, North Florida, Pfeiffer, St. Andrews and Soka (CA).
"We are looking forward to competing at the Wingate Fall Frenzy this weekend," said head coach Nathan Kellogg. "There will be strong competition across the board, and we will have to be sharp. In a championship format meet, depth is always key and I am confident in our depth. We are looking for a total team effort and for everyone to step up and compete. We should be successful if we do that."
The schedule of events for the Wingate Fall Frenzy is as follows:
Friday, November 22nd - Prelims 10:00 am / Finals 6:00 pm
200 Free Relay, 500 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free, 400 Medley Relay
Saturday, November 23rd - Prelims 10:00 am / Finals 6:00 pm
200 Medley Relay, 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, 800 Free Relay
Sunday, November 24th - Prelims 10:00 am / Finals 5:00 pm
1650 Free, 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 200 Fly, 400 Free Relay
The GSU divers are participating in the 28th annual Janis Hape Dowd Nike Cup in Chapel Hill this coming weekend. Preliminaries will begin each day at 10 a.m. and finals each evening at 6 p.m. The Eagles will be competing in the 3-meter dive on Thursday and the 1-meter dive on Friday. Schools with participating divers are UNC, NC State, Duke, East Carolina, Old Dominion, Georgia Southern, and the Naval Academy.
"I have high expectations for this meet," said diving coach David Giambra. "Our divers are coming off a spectacular meet against College of Charleston and East Carolina and have continued to perform strongly during practice. The North Carolina schools all are in our zone, so this meet will serve as a good preview of the divers that we will see later in the season. In our last meet against ECU it was a very close meet in which our divers were able to pull off wins, so if we go in with the same confidence that we went into the last meet, Georgia Southern will come out with some personal bests and high finishes."
GSU swimming and diving returns to action January 11, 2014 against UNC Asheville.
