Box Score STATESBORO, Ga.- Georgia Southern women's soccer suffered a tough loss to the Elon Phoenix Friday evening, 3-2. The Eagles hold a 4-8-2 record overall and were lowered to 2-3-1 in the league. Elon's record is 9-2-4 overall and 3-1-2 in the SoCon.
"The first 45 minutes we played timidly," said Head Coach
Brian Dunleavy. "We didn't play to Elon's level. We made some tactical adjustments and had a fantastic second half. The two goals we got were great, but we gave up two soft goals and weren't able to come back."
With eleven minutes left in the first half, Elon tripped up GSU's defense and slipped the ball past Eagle goalkeeper
Molly Williams, taking the lead 1-0.
At halftime, Elon had the advantage on the scoreboard, 1-0. The Phoenix outshot the Eagles 8-4 in the first half, though the Eagles had three shots on goal while the Phoenix had two.
Just five minutes into the second half the Eagles equalized the scoreboard when
Alex Murphy tipped one into the net past Elon's goalkeeper, Kate Murphy, for her fourth goal of the season. Murphy was assisted by
Nora El-Shami who delivered a free kick from 22 yards that was saved into the path of Murphy.
Shortly after the goal from Murphy,
Caitlin Tongco made a spectacular shot high into the net to score her second goal of the season. The Eagles notched another point on the scoreboard, 2-1.
The match intensified when the Phoenix evened the score at 2-2 with 24 minutes left in regulation. A long ball was saved but got away from goalkeeper
Molly Williams, then was cleaned up by Catherine Brinkman who knocked it in to score for the Phoenix.
At the end of regulation the score was still tied at 2-2, sending the match to overtime.
Three minutes into the overtime period Elon scored the game-winning goal, securing the Phoenix victory. A free kick from 40 yards was knocked into the net by Olivia Mackey.
The Eagles take the field again on Sunday afternoon at 2pm against UNCG. Before the match, GSU will honor its senior class for their contributions to the program.
