STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis squad is eager to return to the court and open the 2012-13 season Friday at the Auburn Invitational. The two day event at the Yarbrough Tennis Complex will give Head Coach Amy Bonner, entering her ninth season at the helm, an early look at her new squad.
“We are excited about our first tournament of the year. It will be a great opportunity for the team to face such a strong field of competitors right from the start,” Bonner said.
Bonner has three upperclassmen returning from last year's young team that finished 6-15 but reached the second round of the Southern Conference Tournament. This year's squad features lone senior, Natalie Maffett, who returns for her final season with the Eagles and is looking to build on last year's 4-9 singles record.
The Eagles also return juniors Caitlin Kitchen and Paola Garrido. Garrido played all 20 matches at the number one spot a year ago and went a team best 13-7 in singles and 10-6 in doubles. The final returner, Alexis Prickett, enters her sophomore season after spending most of last year at number two singles.
Georgia Southern will also welcome in a pair of newcomers for their first tournament with the Eagles when they take the court in Auburn, Ala. Transferring from Murray State, sophomore Jordana Klein brings with her a 12-10 singles record and a 12-8 mark at number three singles. GSU also added freshman Stephanie Woods from John's Creek High School in John's Creek, Ga.
“The fall season is all about getting plenty of match experience to prepare for the upcoming spring. We are looking forward to getting in a lot of tennis in the next two days,” Bonner said.
The play begins Friday morning with a round of doubles and then two rounds of singles will follow to wrap up the day's competition.
