Women’s Soccer Falls at Appalachian State, 1-0

BOONE, N.C. – Just five days removed from the program’s largest margin of victory in five years, Georgia Southern Women’s Soccer dropped a 1-0 decision to Appalachian State on a damp Friday evening in the High Country. The GSU offense cracked off seven shots in the match with three on frame.
“We gave up an early goal and then we couldn’t get our offense working the way it did last weekend,” said head coach Lindsey Vanderspiegel. “We didn’t have too many good looks at goal, but we had a good part of the possession in the middle part of the field. Appalachian State was very good tonight, and if they continue to play the way they did tonight, they are going to surprise some people.”
The Mountaineers converted the first scoring opportunity of the evening into a 1-0 lead for the hosts in the eighth minute. Julia Holz got on the end of a through ball from Hannah Coad inside the penalty area and lobbed a shot past Katie Merson for an early ASU advantage.
The Eagles pressed forward throughout the opening 45 minutes, putting a pair of shots on target in the first half.
In the second period, Appalachian State out-shot the Eagles by an 8-4 margin with two attempts on target to take the 1-0 victory. Merson finished the evening with three saves in goal for the Eagles.
GSU falls to 5-3-3 on the year with a 1-2-0 record in conference play. The Mountaineers improve to 5-5-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the SoCon.
The Eagles close out the month of September on Sunday afternoon with a 2 p.m. contest against Western Carolina before facing College of Charleston on October 4th to close the current road swing. GSU is back at Eagle Field on Sunday, October 7th, as The Citadel comes to town.
