STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Men’s Soccer is back in action on Friday afternoon with a trip to Georgia State for the “Battle of the GSUs.” Friday’s game from Atlanta pits the Eagles at 2-3 on the season against the Panthers who are 2-2 on the year.
Former conference foes in the Trans-America Conference, the Eagles haven’t faced the Panthers since the 2004 season and are looking for their first win over the in-state rival since 1997.
Southern dropped two matches last week, falling to North Florida (4-3) and Mercer (1-0) in the weekend series. Reed Norton and Joe Hughes share the team lead in scoring through the first five games of the season with three goals each. Nick Lane, Seth Prieto and Drew Ruggles also share the lead in assists with two each.
Georgia State’s Alex Vivanco paces the Panther attack with three goals in the opening four matches of the season. Freshman William Mellors-Blair entered the week with 1.33 assists per game, leading the nation in that category. The Panthers opened the season with wins over Jacksonville and North Florida, but have lost their last two matches to Evansville (3-2 in Overtime) and Duke (3-2).
The Eagles continue their road swing with a trip to Wake Forest on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
