Cliff Reed Joins Men's Basketball Coaching Staff

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Head Men’s Basketball Coach Charlton “C.Y.” Young is proud to announce the addition of Cliff Reed to the Eagle coaching staff.
“We are very fortunate to have a coach of Cliff Reed’s magnitude joining our program,” said Young. “Coach Reed will never get enough credit for the phenomenal job he did at Bethune-Cookman, leading them to their first MEAC Championship. For our program, and for me personally, to have a coach sitting on the bench with that kind of experience and knowledge is a blessing and a huge asset for us going forward.”
Reed comes to Statesboro following a 10-year stint as the head coach at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Fla. While with the Wildcats, Reed amassed a 125-166 record including the Wildcats’ first seasons at or above the .500 mark in program history. In 2010-11, Reed’s Wildcats went 21-13 winning the program’s first-ever regular season MEAC Championship.
Bethune-Cookman reached the semifinals of the MEAC Tournament before being eliminated. Reed’s team earned a slot in the NIT, falling to Virginia Tech in the Wildcats’ first postseason appearance since the 1979-80 season. That year, Reed was named MEAC Coach of the Year as well as NABC District 14 Coach of the Year, while his son, C.J. Reed, was named MEAC Player of the Year.
“I am ecstatic and elated to be a part of the staff here at Georgia Southern,” said Reed. “I’ve known Coach Young for over a decade, and I expect that I can come in and help the program continue to grow into a championship program.”
Reed took over as the school’s sixth Head Men’s Basketball Coach with 11 games remaining in the 2001-02 season following the departure of Hoarce Broadnax, the current head coach at Savannah State. Before earning the top-job at Bethune-Cookman, Reed served for four years as an assistant coach with the Wildcats. In the 2005-06 set the school record for winningest season, finishing at 15-15. The Wildcats bested that mark in both 2008-09 and 2009-10 with matching 17-16 records. Bethune-Cookman’s 21-13 record in 2011-12 still stands as the program’s best season on the hardwood.
As a player, Reed transferred to Bethune-Cookman for his final two years. He made a mark on the Wildcat program, setting a then single-game school record for three-pointers in a game with seven. He scored over 1,200 points in two seasons with a scoring average over 21 points per game.
Reed began his rising coaching career in 1992 as the Boy’s Junior Varsity basketball head coach at Mainland Senior High School in Daytona Beach. In 1994, he guided the Buccaneers to a 19-7 record and the Junior Varsity championship. After serving for two years in that position, he became the inaugural head Boys’ Varsity coach at Atlantic High School. During his tenure at Atlantic, Reed led the Sharks to back-to-back District 8 titles on the Class 4-A level. He finished with an overall record of 40-48 between the 1995-98 seasons.
Reed graduated from Bethune-Cookman Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 1991 after receiving an associate degree from Daytona Beach Community College. In 2012, Reed completed his master’s degree in coaching and sport administration from Concordia University. He is a native of Ormond Beach, Florida, and is married to Vera Reed. They have have one son, Clifford Jervon (C.J.) Reed.
