STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Women’s Soccer faces Gardner-Webb and High Point this weekend to open the home portion of the 2012 regular season schedule. The Eagles face the Runnin’ Bulldogs on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. before hosting the Panthers on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
The Eagles opened the 2012 campaign on Sunday afternoon with a weather-affected 2-0 victory over Stetson in Deland. Senior Morgan Springer scored the Eagles’ first goal of the year in the 15th minute while Stephanie Gratto redirected a Courtney Collins shot in the 51st minute for a decisive 2-0 advantage.
With two goals in the net, it was the weather’s turn to play its hand. Two lightning delays, lasting more than five hours in total forced the game to finish at around 8:30 p.m.
Gardner-Webb recorded a 6-8-5 record last season and opened the 2012 season with a 1-0 loss to Wofford on August 17th. The Runnin’ Bulldogs lost their top goalscorer from last year with the departure of Dawn Rollyson, who scored 10 goals last year.
High Point is searching for its first win of the year, earning a 1-1 draw against VCU on August 17th before falling to No. 25 Auburn two days later, 4-1. The Panthers open their home schedule on Friday night before making the trip to Statesboro for Sunday’s afternoon match. Becca Hemby scored both goals for the Panthers in the opening two contests of the year.
GSU travels to Florida’s first coast next weekend for a pair of games against North Florida and Jacksonville starting at 6 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
