STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Women’s Soccer starts their 2012 campaign on Sunday afternoon with a trip to Stetson. The season opener from Deland, Fla. starts at 1 p.m. Sunday’s contest will be the first match between the Eagles and Hatters since the 1995 season.

Southern, in its second season under Head Coach Lindsey Vanderspiegel, enters the 2012 season after returning to the postseason and posting an upset victory over one of the league’s toughest squads, UNCG, in the SoCon Tournament.
Courtney Collins headlines the GSU offensive attack, bringing back her eight goals from a year ago while Alex Murphy had six goals a year ago. Katie Merson returns in goal for GSU while the Eagle defense is anchored by senior Zoe Van Gorder.
Also of note is the addition of 21 freshmen to the squad for the 2012 season and their impact on the Eagles.
Stetson started the 2012 season on Friday evening, traveling to Florida International. The Hatters surrendered four goals, two in each half to fall 4-0. Last year Stetson finished with a 4-11-2 mark, three victories coming in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
Sophomore Colleen O’Kennedy earned preseason All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors to start the 2012 season. Last year she paced the Hatter offense with six goals from her slot in the midfield.
Georgia Southern returns home for the 2012 home opener on Friday, August 24th against Gardner-Webb.
