Marco Osorio Has Strong Showing at 2012 Davis Cup

STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern's Men's Tennis sophomore Marco Osorio finished the 2012 Davis Cup with a 1-3 overall record representing Honduras. The team finished fourth in their pool of matches played at the Shaw Park Tennis Facility in Tobago, Trinidad & Tobago.
Osorio, a native of Tegucigalpa, opened the 2012 Davis Cup with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 doubles win over Aruba, playing alongside Kenny Turicos. The victory clinched the tie as the singles rubbers were split earlier in the day.
On day two, Osorio again played with Turicos in the doubles rubber. Against the host Trinidad & Tobago, the teams battled for nearly two hours with Osorio and Turicos falling, 6-4, 6-2. Osiorio got a new partner on day three against Guatemala. He was paired with Ricardo Pineda, but the pair dropped the rubber 6-1, 6-2 as the Guatemalans earned promotion to Group II for the 2013 Davis Cup.
In the final tie for Honduras in the 2012 Davis Cup, Osorio was promoted to singles play, facing Gonzales Austin, a freshman at Vanderbilt. Osorio fell 6-3, 6-4 to Austin in the finale, giving Osorio a 1-3 overall record, matching Honduras' record in the 2012 Davis Cup.
"We are very proud of Marco for representing Honduras and Georgia Southern with class at such a prestigious tournament," said GSU Head Coach Nick Zieziula. "I've had a few conversations with Marco and he has gotten a lot out of the experience. Training and competing for the national team is going to help him become a better all-around player going into next season."
The Davis Cup is the premiere international team event in men's tennis. The completion dates back to a 1900 challenge between United States and Great Britain, but has become one of the world's largest annual international competitions with 137 nations entering in 2007.
The list of tennis legends to have competed in Davis Cup over the years includes all of the game's most well-known names, with the competition providing a unique team environment in an otherwise individual sport.
Players such as Fred Perry, Don Budge, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Mats Wilander, Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras all enjoyed successful Davis Cup careers.
