BY THE NUMBERS – Softball

STATESBORO, Ga. - "By the Numbers" spotlights a Georgia Southern Athletics team with statistics, rankings and other interesting items of note during our Eagles' seasons. Take a look at some of the numbers the top-seeded Georgia Southern Softball team has posted in 2012 and watch the Eagles play their next Southern Conference championship game Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.

.972: In 1,640 fielding chances, Georgia Southern has committed only 46 errors in 2012 for a .972 fielding percentage, the 23rd best in the nation. The current figure would set a school record with a previous .971 best.

1.63: The Eagles' pitching staff ranks first in eight of the nine SoCon statistical categories, including its league-leading 1.63 earned run average. The last NCAA ranking had Georgia Southern's ERA as 15th nationally (1.69 through games of May 6, 2012).

2: Freshman
Lexi Allen's second career home run sailed over the left field fence at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium in the 6th inning Thursday night to add to the Eagles' lead. She hit her first career home run against Appalachian State in the first meeting between the two teams during the regular season.

4: Senior Mackenzie Williams, who has seven home runs this year and 20 in her career, hit four dingers during the final week of March. She had one against Kennesaw State March 25 and then one each in three conference games vs. Chattanooga. Her home runs this year have accounted for 15 runs scored.

14: A mainstay in several Georgia Southern career and single-season statistical top-10s, senior Marie Fogle became the 14th SoCon Softball student-athlete to be honored for her three selections for first-team league honors. Fogle and Nina Iduate (2008-2010) are the only two Eagles to achieve this distinction.

22: The 22 Southern Conference wins set a record for the Eagles as well the establishing the highest win total in the league. The two losses in SoCon play this season were the lowest in the conference since 2002. The Eagles began the 2012 season with an 8-1 mark in the SoCon, their best-ever start.

24.2: Sophomore pitcher Allie Miles had a stretch of 24.2 innings without allowing a run in 2012, beginning with the Appalachian State series and ending the final weekend against Furman. Miles threw a single-game record 15 strikeouts in a single game in the 2011 tournament.

40: Georgia Southern recorded is 40th win of the season Thursday night with a 6-0 win over Appalachian State, for the first 40-win softball season in school history.

41: The Eagles have 41 home runs in 2012, the second-best single-season total in school history. Fogle leads the team with 9 with Williams and Kortny Thomas each with 7.

228: With 238 strikeouts this year, Sarah Purvis, the 2012 SoCon Pitcher of the Year, not only set Georgia Southern's single-season record, but moved into  the top 10 in that category in the league record book. Her total of 17 so far in the tournament, including 9 vs. Samford and 8 vs. Appalachian State, places her in a tie for 6th on SoCon single-season record chart.
