Eagles fall to Wofford on Senior Day

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team was unable to come away with a victory on Senior Day and its last home match of the 2011-12 season. The Eagles fell to Wofford on Saturday afternoon by a 5-2 score.
The Eagles (5-13, 2-7 SoCon) suffered a heartbreaking loss in doubles play to begin the afternoon slate of action. Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) and Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.) gave the Eagles the lead in doubles when they overcame a 3-2 deficit to win eight of nine games to prevail at No. 1 doubles over Sarah Evans and Othilia Lindqvist, 8-4. The Terriers leveled doubles play at 1-1 when Julia Paulson and Emily Przystawski stymied Scottie French (St. Augustine, Fla.) and Taylor Jones (Warner Robins, Ga.) at No. 2 doubles, 8-5. The fate of the doubles point then fell on the rackets of the No. 3 doubles tandem of the Eagles, Alexis Prickett (Charleston, S.C.) and Mimi Bollaci (Atlanta, Ga.). The Eagles held a 6-5 lead over Lucy Schermerhorn and Samantha Sullivan but lost two straight to fall behind, 7-6. Prickett and Bollaci staved off a match point by enduring two overhead blows and broke the Terriers to even the match at 7-7. After trading breaks of serve, the match entered a match tiebreaker at 8-8. The Eagles overcame two additional match points and leveled the tiebreaker at 6-6, but then they lost the next two points to fall and give the doubles point and match lead to the Terriers.
The Terriers' grabbing of the doubles point sparked them as they moved into singles action. Lindqvist put the Terriers up 2-0 when she won the last five games of the match to down Cameron Williams (Norcross, Ga.) at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-4. French rallied to take a 5-4 lead in the 2nd set only to fall to Schermerhorn at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 7-5, giving the Terriers a 3-0 match lead. Wofford clinched the match when Kitchen's comeback attempt was stalled by Audrey Coventry at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-4.Garrido put the Eagles on the board by ousting Evans at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Allison Beeler (Alpharetta, Ga.) won the first set and rallied to win the second as well in her 6-4, 6-4 win over Paulson at No. 2 singles, tallying the Eagles' second point of the afternoon. The last match on court was that of lone senior, Alessandra Dzuba (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.). Unfortunately for the Eagles, she fell in the last home match of her collegiate career when she was outlasted by Przystawski at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-4, giving the Terriers a 5-2 match victory.
The Eagles will look to rebound from the loss when they wrap up regular season play on Friday in a bout with No. 61 College of Charleston. First serve against the Cougars is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m. in Charleston. The match will also serve as Senior Day for the Cougar squad.
