STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Women's Basketball team added four players for the 2012-13 season. The Eagles' signing class should help bolster new Head Coach Chris Vozab's first squad.
Georgia Southern signed two point guards and two forwards, including Maggie Davis, Sierra Kirkland, Kiki Rawls and Alexis Sams, to NLIs for the upcoming season.
"We welcome Maggie, Sierra, Kiki and Lexi into the Georgia Southern Women's Basketball family. These are four student-athletes whose values and character mesh with our current players," said coach Vozab. "We cannot wait for them to arrive and join us in our quest to attain success on the court, in the classroom and throughout the Statesboro community."
The 2011-2012 All-Space Coast Player of the Year, Maggie Davis joins the Eagles after helping Viera High School to a program-best 23 wins and a Class 7A regional final appearance. The Idialantic, Fla., native did it all last season and averaged 14.6 points, 10.0 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 3.3 steals a game.
"Maggie's versatility will be an asset for us during her career," said coach Vozab. "She prides herself on her ability to contribute at multiple positions."
Davis was also named to the Cape Coast Conference First Team all four years and led Brevard County in scoring in the same period. She scored her 1,000th point in the final game of her Junior Year on February 15, 2011 and finished with 1,392 career points.
The other forward in the 2012-13 signing class, Sierra Kirkland is ranked as a two-star recruit by ESPN. Kirkland hails from Statesboro and helped Statesboro High School to a 26-4 record as a junior. She helped lead the Blue Devils to two 2AAAA region championships, three sweet sixteens and two elite eight appearances.
"Sierra is a gifted athlete who has already gained much notoriety locally for her success at Statesboro High School. We expect her to continue to develop her skills and athleticism as an Eagle," stated Vozab.
Kirkland earned a number of honors during her time at Statesboro High School including, Most Valuable Player last season, All-Region 2AAAA team all four years and was selected to the GSWA All-State AAAA Basketball team in 2012. She also participated in the North vs. South All-Star game and the Georgia vs. South Carolina All-Star game.
Kiki Rawls is one of two point guards signed in this year's class and was a District 12-5A First-Team selection after averaging 17.9 points per game. She scored 20 or more points in six of her games last year. Rawls was selected three times to the All-Area team and was an All-District selection all four years at Shoemaker High School in Killeen, Texas.
"Kiki is athletic with the ball, which enables her to create her own shot. We look for her to develop as a playmaker and scorer throughout her time here," said Vozab.
The other point guard in this year's class, Alexis Sams finished her career at Brantley High School with 1,240 points. Sams missed her senior year with an injury but averaged 19 points, five assists and four steals in her junior season. She was also named First Team All-Seminole County and Second Team All-Central Florida in 2011.
"Lexi brings a reputation as an intense competitor who understands the game, can distribute the ball and orchestrate an offense with confidence and skill," stated Vozab.
