Men's Tennis Opens SoCon Championship vs. Wofford

The Eagles (2-19, 1-9 SoCon) will look to ride the momentum created from their solid play in last week's slate of matches. Monday saw the squad score three points and nearly pull off the upset at top-seeded College of Charleston. The Eagles captured the doubles point due to the fortitude of Kyle Hoffman (Sarasota, Fla.), Matthijs Verdam (Hilversum, The Netherlands), Derrick Davison (Peachtree City, Ga.) and Daniel Rush (Orange Park, Fla.) down the stretch in their matches, and they also received singles victories from Hoffman and Marco Osorio (Tegucigalpa, Honduras), but it wasn't quite enough to defeat the Cougars on that afternoon. The team followed their solid performance in Charleston by registering a 6-1 win on Friday against The Citadel on Senior Day. Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain) and Andrew Dromsky (Martinez, Ga.) provided the clutch doubles play to secure the point against the Bulldogs, while the Eagles also notched singles points from Albert Codina Sala (Manresa, Spain), Dromsky, Hoffman, Verdam and Osorio, who now sports an impressive four-match singles winning streak.
The Eagles will first square off against the Wofford Terriers. Wofford owns a 5-5 record in SoCon play and a 6-11 record overall. The Eagles will look to avenge their loss in the tightly-contested 5-2 decision that went the Terriers' way in their regular season matchup on March 26 in Spartanburg. Dromsky and Osorio notched singles victories in the match, but Garrido and Hoffman lost matches that could have gone either way, and the Eagles lost the doubles point in a match tiebreaker at the No. 3 position. Georgia Southern was also missing the veteran presences of Verdam and Davison who were shelved due to injury. The Eagles will look to have a better fate than they did in last year's SoCon Championship when they fell in a 4-3 contest to Chattanooga in the opening round. There is not much disparity from top to bottom of the SoCon standings, so the tournament draw is wide open for the up-and-coming Eagle squad to leave their mark.
