MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team was unable to end its regular season in winning fashion on Friday afternoon. The Eagles fell on the road to No. 71 College of Charleston by a 7-0 score. The Cougars improve to 21-5 on the season with a 9-1 mark in SoCon action.
The Eagles (5-14, 2-8 SoCon) fell in an early hole when they lost the doubles point to the Cougars. The Cougar Newman tandem, Caroline and Christin, downed Allison Beeler (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Mimi Bollaci (Atlanta, Ga.) at No. 3 doubles to open the scoring for Charleston. Jenny Falcone and Kelly Kambourelis then clinched the doubles point for the Cougars when they engineered an 8-3 defeat of Natalie Maffett (Rome, Ga.) and Alexis Prickett (Charleston, S.C.) at No. 2 doubles. Samantha Maddox and Irene Viana added a third Cougar doubles victory when they pulled through over Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) and Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.) at No. 1 doubles, 8-3.
The Cougars were able to carry their solid play in doubles over into singles action. Falcone ousted Alessandra Dzuba (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) at No. 5 singles to open singles scoring. Kambourelis gave Charleston a 3-0 lead when she downed Beeler at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-1. The Cougars clinched the match victory when Katie Lee defeated Maffett at No. 6 singles by a 7-6, 6-0 score. Maddox ruined Prickett's homecoming trip when she pulled through against the Eagle in three sets. Caroline Newman defeated Kitchen at No. 3 singles, while her sister, Christin, did the same to Garrido at No. 1 singles to give the Cougars a 7-0 victory.
The Eagles will look to bounce back from the loss when they next take the courts in the Southern Conference Tournament on Thursday in Charleston. First-round opponent and match time will be released once the bracket is constructed by the SoCon office.
