STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Men's Tennis team will look to close its 2012 regular season slate with a victory when it hosts The Citadel on Friday afternoon. First serve against the Bulldogs is set for 3 p.m. at Hanner Tennis Complex. The match will also serve as Senior Day for the Eagle squad when it celebrates the careers of Derrick Davison (Peachtree City, Ga.), Sebastien Felt (Vienna, Austria) and team captain Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain). Senior Day festivities will take place prior to the match.
The Eagles (1-19, 0-9 SoCon) are looking to get back on track after suffering several close defeats in conference action. Three of those losses have come by a 4-3 score including Monday's heartbreaker at first place College of Charleston, who is undefeated in SoCon play. The Eagles rallied to take the doubles point in thrilling fashion due to the clutch play of teams Matthijs Verdam (Hilversum, The Netherlands)/Kyle Hoffman (Sarasota, Fla.) and Davison/Daniel Rush (Orange Park, Fla.). They also received singles victories from Hoffman and Marco Osorio (Tegucigalpa, Honduras), but it wasn't enough to overcome the 13-3 Cougars on that afternoon. Osorio has played very impressively over the course of his current three-match singles winning streak.
The Citadel Bulldogs are 5-16 on the season with a 0-9 mark in SoCon action. They are currently on a three-match losing streak at the hands of Appalachian State, Furman and College of Charleston. The Eagles are 21-6 all-time against the Bulldogs including a 6-1 win in last year's contest, aided by singles wins from Verdam and Garrido as well as doubles wins from Verdam, Garrido and Davison. Verdam also won in 2010's 4-3 loss, while Garrido helped the Eagles defeat the Bulldogs by a 6-1 score in 2009.
