Women?s Tennis Returns to Conference Play on Road

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team will return to conference play when it hits the road for a weekend slate of action. The Eagles will travel to Birmingham on Saturday for a bout with Samford at 2 p.m. The road trip will conclude in Chattanooga with a battle against the Lady Mocs on Sunday at noon.
The Eagles (4-5) snapped their two-match winning streak with a loss to the 9-2 Campbell Camels on Tuesday afternoon. Alexandra Langmo (Boca Raton, Fla.) picked up her third singles victory of the season in the loss, and senior Alessandra Dzuba (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) teamed with Cameron Williams (Norcross, Ga.) to get the win at No. 3 doubles. Dzuba notched her second victory on the season in as many attempts and looks to build on her 7-4 record last spring. Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) lost in singles action for only the second time this spring, both in third-set match tiebreakers. She was honored by being named the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week on Wednesday afternoon thanks to her three victories last Friday and her hefty 3.95 GPA while majoring in Pre-Business.
The Samford Bulldogs are 8-2 on the season with their only losses coming this week to College of Charleston and No. 50 Georgia State. Their home winning streak, dating back to March 27th of last season, also came to an end. The Bulldogs had only dropped a total of five individual matches coming into the week and had been undefeated at the No. 2 and No. 6 singles positions as well as the No. 2 doubles position. Samford finished with an impressive 18-5 record last season, good for fourth in the conference. The Eagles lost 6-1 in last year's matchup with the Bulldogs and are 1-4 all-time against them, their lone win coming in 2009.
The Lady Mocs of Chattanooga are 8-1 on the season, only dropping a 4-3 contest at Middle Tennessee State. They are currently riding a four-game winning streak and have only been defeated once at the No. 1, No. 5, and No. 6 singles positions on the season as well as the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. The Lady Mocs, fifth in the SoCon last season, will open conference play against visiting College of Charleston on Friday afternoon. The Eagles are 15-10 all-time against the Lady Mocs but lost last year's contest, 4-3, breaking a string of nine consecutive matches won by the Eagles dating back to 2002.
