STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Men’s Tennis team will look to even its conference record at 1-1 when it plays host to Davidson on Wednesday afternoon. Play is slated to begin at 3 p.m. at Hanner Tennis Complex. The match was originally scheduled for Saturday morning, but torrential rain forced the conference bout to be postponed.
The Eagles (1-9) are looking to get back in the win column after suffering several close defeats. The Eagles received singles and doubles wins from freshmen Albert Codina Sala (Manresa, Spain) and Daniel Rush (Orange Park, Fla.) in their conference opener against UNC Greensboro on Sunday, and the team had a lead on every court, but they eventually lost three three-set heartbreakers and the match, 4-3. The close defeats are evidenced by the fact that the team posts a combined record of 8-17 in both three-set matches and singles tiebreakers on the season. The experienced gained through playing in these tight matches should benefit the Eagles as they move forward into the meat of their conference schedule.
The Davidson Wildcats sport a 3-5 record coming into Saturday’s match. The Eagles have a 12-10 all-time record against the Wildcats with their last win coming in 2009, the last meeting that was played in Statesboro. The Wildcats have prevailed by a 4-3 score in each of the last two seasons. Senior Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain) is 2-1 in his singles matches against the Wildcats including a win that clinched the match in 2009.
