Eagles Downed in Dual at Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Georgia Southern Men's Tennis team lost another close one in its conference bout in Spartanburg on Monday afternoon. The Eagles fell to the Wofford Terriers by a 5-2 score. The win is the Terriers' fourth of the season and improves them to 3-2 in conference play.
The Eagles (1-18, 0-8 SoCon) began the match ominously when they lost the doubles point in heartbreaking fashion. Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain) and Andrew Dromsky (Martinez, Ga.) took care of business and won their second match in as many days to give the Eagles the early doubles lead. They dethroned Tinus Van Wyk and Rob Galloway at No. 1 doubles by an 8-4 score. The Terriers rallied to level the match when Tom Wood and Stuart Robinson defeated Kyle Hoffman (Sarasota, Fla.) and Daniel Rush (Orange Park, Fla.) at No. 2 doubles, 8-5. With the doubles point on the line, the Eagle tandem of Albert Codina Sala (Manresa, Spain) and Sebastien Felt (Vienna, Austria) came up just short and fell in a match tiebreaker to Walker Heffron and Jackson Keith at No. 3 doubles, 9-8.
Winning the doubles point fueled the Terriers as they moved into singles action. Heffron downed Rush at No. 6 singles and Galloway did the same to Codina Sala at No. 4 singles to give the Terriers a 3-0 lead. However, the Eagles vaunted back into the match when Dromsky and Marco Osorio (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) notched wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles. Dromsky won by a 6-3, 7-6 score over Drew Superstein in his first career match at the No. 2 position, while Osorio defeated Wood in his third three-set win of the season, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2. Each player has posted singles wins in back-to-back days, winning also at Furman in Sunday afternoon's contest. Unfortunately for the Eagles, 3-2 was as close as they would get to the Terriers. Van Wyk rallied from a set down to defeat Garrido at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, clinching the match for Wofford. Keith added a 7-5, 6-3 win over Hoffman at No. 3 singles to give the Terriers their fifth point of the afternoon.
The Eagles will take two much-deserved rest weeks before they visit College of Charleston, the two-time defending regular season champion of the SoCon. Matches are slated to begin on April 9 at 2:30 p.m.
