STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team sets its GPS for North Carolina as it prepares for a two-match swing through the Tar Heel State. The Eagles will first play visitor to UNC Greensboro on Sunday afternoon at noon. The road trip concludes with a trip to Elon and a battle with the Phoenix on Monday at 2 p.m.
The Eagles (4-10, 1-4 SoCon) are looking to bounce back from three tough home losses last week to Troy, Appalachian State and Furman. Allison Beeler (Alpharetta, Ga.) had a very successful week on the court, notching wins against Troy and Appalachian State while narrowly falling to Furman in a third-set match tiebreaker at No. 2 singles. Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) picked up a singles win against Appalachian State and doubles wins against the Mountaineers and Furman when teaming with partner Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.). The doubles tandems of Cameron Williams (Norcross, Ga.) and Scottie French (St. Augustine, Fla.) and Natalie Maffett (Rome, Ga.) and Mimi Bollaci (Atlanta, Ga.) also posted wins in the week.
The Spartans of UNC Greensboro are 8-4 on the season and 3-0 in the SoCon with a three-match winning streak over Samford, Chattanooga and Davidson. They are led by Niltooli Wilkins who sports a nearly-perfect 11-1 record from the No. 1 singles position. The Eagles are 4-10 all-time against the Spartans, losing 6-1 last year but winning a 4-3 affair in 2010's contest. Maffett notched a doubles win that was pivotal to the victory.
The Elon Phoenix are 12-5 on the season with three losses coming to ranked opponents. The Phoenix are 3-2 in SoCon action and were riding a three-match winning streak until they fell to Chattanooga, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon. The Phoenix have posted a hefty 15-2 record from the #1 doubles position this season. A potential matchup looming between the team of Frida Jansaker and Jordan Johnston and Eagle tandem Garrido and Kitchen would be a barnburner. The Eagles have a 5-4 all-time record against the Phoenix but have lost two straight including a 4-3 loss last year. Alessandra Dzuba (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) notched a singles win in the match, while Maffett and the team of Garrido and Kitchen notched doubles victories. Beeler prevailed in singles in the 2010 meeting between the teams.
