STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Men's Tennis team fell to Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon by a 7-0 score. The match began on Friday with the Mountaineers capturing the doubles point, but rain pushed the completion of singles play to Saturday. The Mountaineers improve to 7-5 on the season and 1-1 in SoCon action with the win.
The Eagles (1-16, 0-6 SoCon) fell in an early hole on Friday when they lost three close matches to lose the doubles point. The Mountaineers grabbed the first doubles match when Alain Humblet and Alex Markov defeated freshmen Floridians Kyle Hoffman (Sarasota, Fla.) and Daniel Rush (Orange Park, Fla.) at No. 2 doubles, 8-5. The Mountaineers clinched the doubles point when Phillip Kloc and Sebastien King engineered a comeback at No. 1 doubles to oust Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain) and Andrew Dromsky (Martinez, Ga.) by an 8-6 score. Steve Karendal and Andrew McKinnon proceeded to sweep doubles action for Appalachian State when they won the match tiebreaker to down Sebastien Felt (Vienna, Austria) and Albert Codina Sala (Manresa, Spain), 9-8.
Each of the six singles matches was tight when rain postponed play to Saturday. However, the halt in play wasn't beneficial to the Eagles. Dromsky fell to Humblet at No. 3 singles to give the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead. His partner, Garrido, lost to Markov at No. 1 singles to give Appalachian State a 3-0 lead, and they clinched the match win when Karendal downed Rush at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Hoffman lost to Kloc at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 7-5, while Felt fell to Matt Saltsgaver at No. 6 singles by a 7-5, 6-1 score to give the Mountaineers their fifth and sixth points of the match. King defeated Codina Sala at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 7-5, to round out the scoring for the Mountaineers.
The Eagles will face a quick turnaround when they travel to Greenville to dual against Furman on Sunday at 11 a.m. The road trip will conclude on Monday with a match against Wofford at 10 a.m. in Spartanburg.
